Stedman Graves House ❖ 1927

Address: 1701 San Gabriel Street

Historic Designation: City of Austin Historic Landmark (1981)

The 1927 Stedman-Graves House is a historic landmark designed by prominent Austin architect Edwin Kreisle in the Colonial Georgian Revival style and was home to notable lawyer and Judge Ireland Graves and his civically active wife, Mary Stedman Graves. Kreisle designed over 1,000 Austin buildings, including schools, churches, stores, and public housing projects such as Chalmers Courts, one of the first federal housing projects completed under the 1937 Housing Act, and several of Austin’s oldest fire stations. Graves purchased the property in 1910, which had originally been part of land owned by early settlers dating back to 1852. While their house was being built, the Graves family lived nearby with relatives at 807 West 16th Street, a home originally built by the Stedmans in 1921.
